neighborhood of Miami-Dade County, Florida. The home consists of a 7,000
square foot main building and 400 square foot pool cabana. The home was
designed by Raul Sotolongo with the help of Sara Blanche.
The site is located in a cul-de-sac which had previously been a 7-acre
private estate but was subdivided in separate lots after Hurricane
Andrew. The site is blessed with large stands of mature native trees.
The home was sited so as to preserve the existing trees, resulting in a
floor plan consisting of and entry pavilion (containing guest bedrooms
and a children’s playroom) which is connected to the main public spaces
and family living quarters by a long, large-windowed gallery. The
gallery opens to a two-story living room, grand staircase and cupola.
Besides the living room, the ground floor contains a formal dining room,
family room, billiard room, library/study, kitchen and breakfast room.
The master bedroom suite and two children’s bedrooms are on the second
floor.
The rural-like site inspired the “Florida Cracker” architectural style.
The front pavilion is an adaptation of a “dog trot” home common to early
rural Florida settlers. The larger, rear part of the home is patterned
on the basics of a “Georgia Four-Square” – a common design of southern
architecture, including early Florida homes. The home features deep,
broad porches, large roof overhangs and metal roofs.
The home was one of four finalists for the top award in architecture
from the Builders’ Association of South Florida in 2002, garnering their
“Best” Platinum awards in both architecture and interior design.

Arbor Courts is a development of 284 townhomes completed in 1990. It is
located in Kings Meadow, at the southwest corner of SW 137th Avenue and
N. Kendall Drive in West Kendall, Miami-Dade County, Florida. The site
was developed with linear parks and man-made lakes surrounding the
20-acres (out of the 640-acre Kings Meadow). Contrary to much of the
land planning seen in the suburbs using curvy roads, cul-de-sacs and
dead end, the site was planned with a gridded street pattern with
numerical and alphabetized streets to allow guests and residents to find
their way.
The townhomes were built of solid, poured-in-place concrete (including
the intermediate and roof slabs), four units to a building in a pinwheel
layout. Each townhome is a corner unit with an L-shaped floor plan
resulting in each having a completely private courtyard. The structures
proved to be quite sturdy inasmuch as the Arbor Courts townhomes were
the only residential structures in the area that did not suffer any
significant damage from the ravages of Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
