The Summit at Melbourne Place is located in Melbourne, Florida. The
project is located on a very important infill site which provides an
important pedestrian link through a garden walk that connects the
historic downtown to the waterfront parks along the Indian River Lagoon.
The project program consists of approximately 168 condominium and
townhouse units, a 110 room boutique hotel, approximately 10,000 SF to
retail, a 2,700 SF restaurant, landscaped amenities deck with two pools
and a spa, fitness center and lounge on top of a 3-story parking
structure.
The architecture of the residential tower is streamlined, modern and
playful - it draws inspiration from the tropical/Brazil/Florida mid
century modern beach architecture - the roof is a floating aerodynamic
concrete plane shaped a bit like a surfboard and dramatically up-lit
from below, where it is held aloft by a curving pillar. The palette of
the building is ocean and surfing inspired, from the "nautilus" mailroom
to the "blue tube" elevator bank.
The boutique hotel is located over a "green skin" of lower scaled
boutique retail. The hotel appears to be floating above a layer of
tropical foliage - the two bars of the hotel slide past each other. One
bar is made of brick and related to the materiality of the historic New
Haven Avenue, which is the "main street" of Melbourne. The other hotel
bar is stucco and glass and relates more to the materials and modern
feel of the new residential tower.
